QuickSilver Mines

1. Picture Rock
2. Iron?
3. Picture Rock (agatized?)
4. Granite with sulfer or wolfanite?
5. Snake skin agate?
6. Iron and Hematite

These all came from the Quicksilver Mines area South of San Jose. Mercury was mined from this area during the late 1800s. These are our best estimates about what they are. Anthony Allred ([email protected]) has helped us identify some of them. (Thanks, Anthony)

Rick Behl ([email protected]) has also provided information, describing the geological history of this area as:

the Jurassic Franciscan Formation - a jumbled mixture of sediments and volcanic rocks that were scraped off an oceanic plate as it was thrust under the North American continent about 160-100 million years ago.
